Biographical / Historical
The Here's My Story Project was created in response to a call from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation for inclusive public art. The project was created and submitted by the Rowan-Cabarrus Community College Department of Art and Design Faculty; it focuses on recording, sharing, and archiving stories of the people of Rowan County, North Carolina, who identified as being historically marginalized. The goal of the project is to increase levels of community engagement and social cohesion through individual storytelling by highlighting how racial, cultural, and ethnic diversity of communities makes them stronger and more resilient. Although the project was created by Rowan-Cabarrus Staff and Faculty, it enjoys widespread community support from the Rowan County Public Library, the City of Salisbury, the Salisbury Public Art Committee, Salisbury Pride, Livingstone College, and a host of business leaders, community leaders, and local clergy. Oral histories from historically marginalized community members were recorded, placed on YouTube, and also placed on specially sculpted benches throughout the community for listening. A book was created about the project, and PBS featured it on one of their episodes for their Visibly Speaking Series.
