This collection contains digitized materials collected by Bill Hamrick, a Fire Science Technology student from 1978-1980. Newspaper clippings, yearbooks, and lists of graduates make up the bulk of the collection Also included are Hamrick's student identification card, Fire Protection Society certificate, and commencement program.

In 1979, during his time as a student, the college changed names from "Rowan Technical Institute" to "Rowan Technical College", and both names are seen in the collection. In the 1979 yearbook, Spectrum, his last name is misspelt at 'Harrick'.

Historical Note

William "Bill" Anthony Hamrick enrolled in Fire Protection and Fire Science courses at Rowan-Cabarrus, then Rowan Technical Institute, after graduating from Burlington's Walter M. Williams High School in June, 1978. While in high school, he had been a charter member of the Burlington Fire Department's Explorer Post No. 1. The Fire Explorer program, affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America, provided hands-on experience to teenagers interested in firefighting. During his college years, he served as a student volunteer firefighter at the Salisbury Fire Department. Bill was a member of Rowan Tech's Fire Protection Society and graduated with an Associate of Applied Science in Fire Science Technology in 1980. Since his graduation, he has served in a variety of fire and safety roles including Locke Township Fire Department Assistant Chief and Medical Responder Coordinator, and Rowan County EMS Battalion Chief.
